Adapted for screen from the internationally acclaimed stage musical by Alain Boubil and Claude-Michel Schönberg, Les Miserables takes place in France during the early 19th century and tells the story of Jean Valjean – imprisoned for stealing bread for his nephew. A man with integrity, he becomes a town mayor and later a philanthropist in Paris, though he is hunted for decades by the ruthless policeman Javert after breaking parole. Along the way he promises Fantine, a sex-worker, that he will take care of her child before she dies; Cosette grows up and falls in love with Marius, a student of the rebellion, who in turn is loved by Eponine, an urchin girl. The story reaches resolution against the background of the June Rebellion of 1832.
